Earlier this year, Robert Horsfall, Head of Finance and Strategic Projects at Tyseley Energy Park, joined key regional figures such as Mayor Richard Parker and Henriette Breukelaar, Canal & River Trust’s Director of the West Midlands, at the launch of the Canal & River Trust’s West Midlands Canal Prospectus. This landmark event set out the plan for reviving our historic canal network as a key resource for the clean regeneration of Birmingham, which is something we are delighted to support.

The Transformative Power of Birmingham’s Historic Waterways

Canals are an iconic part of Birmingham’s history. Although they no longer play a main role in serving the industrial heart of the city, they are still an effective way to connect people and places. Canals not only provide a sustainable transport link, they also help to instil a sense of regional pride.

The West Midlands Canal Prospectus outlines how canals could be integrated into the region’s regeneration plans and used to help achieve the West Midlands Growth Strategy, which forms the region’s commitment to delivering inclusive economic growth, creating jobs and homes, and becoming carbon neutral by 2041.

The prospectus sets out four key themes where canals could play a key role:

  1. Place & Prosperity: Supporting sustainable growth, boating, development and living
  2. Nature & Biodiversity: Preserving vital habitats and corridors for nature to thrive
  3. Health & Wellbeing: Connecting people with blue spaces, routes and nature
  4. Resilience & Security: Providing a critical and interconnected part of the nation’s infrastructure

These areas closely align with our mission at Tyseley Energy Park, to help drive inclusive economic growth and innovation that supports job creation and pathways for unlocking community, business and wider economic benefits in East Birmingham and beyond.

Regional growth goals require collaborative action between decision-makers, local government, and industry leaders, which is why we were honoured to be invited to this important launch event.

Robert Horsfall commented:

“At Tyseley Energy Park we are excited to be a part of the Canal & River Trust’s vision for canals. Hearing how Birmingham’s canal network could be used to drive growth in the region is inspiring. Being located very close to a canal, we are looking forward to exploring how we can utilise them more effectively to move materials to our site and create new dynamic, sustainable connections with the city’s historic waterways.”

During the industrial revolution, Birmingham’s canals were integral to the region’s economy, and now, 300 years later, we’re proud to be located along the Grand Union Canal and play our part in providing a thriving hub for the clean growth revolution.
