INNOVATE

The Birmingham Energy Innovation Centre provides R&D, modelling, benchmarking and validation services.

The University of Birmingham’s £7 million Birmingham Energy Innovation Centre (BEIC) has been funded by the Greater Birmingham & Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership (GBSLEP).

Working with existing energy and transportation system stakeholders, the BEIC will stimulate collaborative research and development projects to overcome local energy and low carbon transport challenges in addition to demonstrating new and emerging technologies.

By supporting the development and deployment of these new technologies at scale, the BEIC will help decarbonise electricity and heat and improve the environmental performance of the city as it seeks to achieve net zero CO2 emissions by 2030.

INCUBATE

Incubation space is available at TEP via two SME support programmes. The Climate Innovation Platform and the Energy Transition Centre programmes have been designed to provide businesses with access to packages of support that will drive the development of an SME’s low carbon business offerings. 

 

 

 

Energy Transition Centre

The Climate Innovation Platform (CIP)

Kick start support for businesses/technologies in early stages of technology readiness.

The University of Birmingham in partnership with the Energy Systems Catapult, is looking for businesses committed to driving energy technology innovation to join the Climate Innovation Platform (CIP).

Supported by HSBC UK, CIP offers businesses a package of tailored support to drive the commercialisation of innovative energy products and services.

CIP will support 100 SMEs over a four-year incubation programme, commencing in July 2021.

This funded programme focuses on short term 6-12 support is well aimed at SME’s beginning their journey to commercialisation.

As a part of the CIP your business will benefit from:

Access to funding

Support in identifying grant funding opportunities for your business and routes into investor networks.

ATETA

Access to business engagement support through University of Birmingham’s ATETA programme. This programme, designed to help SMEs improve efficiency and test new ideas, offers access to research expertise and facilities as well as research and technical support from Knowledge Exchange Fellows.

 

Business development

Access to a range of business development support, including financial planning, start-up mentoring, market research expertise, IP protection expertise, advice on regulation and standards, grant writing and bid development, and investor access support.

Dedicated support team

A dedicated commercialisation team led by an Incubation Manager that will act as your direct point of contact for CIP services.

Energy Launchpad

Tailored incubation and acceleration support from the Energy Systems Catapult to help address systemic barriers, de-risk innovation, help businesses scale and secure investment.

Impactio

A select number of businesses from the CIP programme will go on to participate in HSBC’s global Climate Solutions Partnership innovation accelerator, powered by WWF’s Impactio platform, which will help further scale climate solutions, supporting business innovations in partnership with leading universities, research institutes, incubators and accelerators.

You will be invited to a programme of workshops and seminars to support the growth of your business.

Market insights

The CIP team will work with you to identify and initiate new market opportunities, providing you with marketing insights and assessments into your industry.

Manufacturing support

THE CIP programme is able to offer manufacturing support including energy technology R&D, prototyping and access to a platform to test and demonstrate innovative ideas.

Office/workshop space

Shared workshop areas or a virtual presence in our incubation space at Tyseley Energy Park in the heart of Birmingham. Businesses based at Tyseley Energy Park will also have access to secure and renewable power.

Energy Transition Centre (ETC)

Supporting SMEs establish their low carbon business offering.

Funded by the Greater Birmingham and Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership the ETC offers newly refurbished office, laboratory and industrial units for businesses who can build on the innovation and research activity located within the recently constructed Birmingham Energy Innovation Centre (BEIC).

By clustering this activity at TEP the intention is to enable a pathway for businesses to improve their competitiveness, develop collaborative opportunities and deploy game changing low carbon technologies across the region.

This funded programme focuses on mid term 12-36 month support is well aimed at SME’s establishing their businesses.

From July 2021, nine newly refurbished office/lab spaces will be available ranging in size from 250sqft to 800sqft. Click here to view all ETC Space.

A range of larger industrial units will be available from the summer of 2022.

Businesses qualifying for acceptance must be a SME interested in low and zero carbon power, transport, heat, waste or recycling solutions.

The business will lease the space for a minimum of one-year and have a technology or business model in energy, waste or mobility looking to benefit from:

Secure renewable power from the on-site biomass power plant
Access to a communal lounge, meeting rooms, joint working collaboration space and outdoor breakout spaces
Onsite tool room and tool maker
Access to University of Birmingham Laboratory facilities for testing and analytical services
Collaboration opportunities with like-minded businesses on site
Access to TEP’s network from the public sector, industry, business and academia.
Access to further plots and buildings for testing and demonstration

DEMONSTRATE

The TEP Commercial Demonstrator looks to offer serviced plots of land/space and support for technologies needing to prove commercial readiness in real life environments alongside a cluster of world class low carbon technologies.

Our flexible commercial testing and demonstrator plots span the two-acre site and can accommodate technologies needing upwards of 0.3 acre plots. Available from 2022 on a minimum 3-year term, tenants will have uninterrupted access to the premises at all times.

ACCOMMODATE

TEP has a range of workshop and office space to house technology innovators, scientists, and project developers, all of whom are working on solutions that will underpin the transition to low or zero carbon future  for long term growth.

Tenants will benefit from being part of a vibrant community of innovators in Birmingham, located with good transport links and being the focus of Birmingham’s Green Energy Recovery. There is 9920 sqft available for rent on a minimum 3-year term.
