From zero carbon power and EV innovation, to rare earth magnet recycling, our members at Tyseley Energy Park are developing real solutions to the energy challenges we face in the UK.

Recently, we began a series of spotlighting innovation in action, and for the second iteration of this, we’re showcasing the work of Voltempo.

In this blog, we explore how Voltempo is decarbonising commercial transport through electrification, revolutionising the future of electric vehicle charging, and sharing some of their highlights from 2025.

Meet Voltempo

Founded in 2019, Voltempo is revolutionising the future of electric vehicle charging. Its mission? To accelerate the adoption and optimisation of electric freight solutions with their end-to-end service and HyperCharger Megawatt Charging System (MCS).

The company continues to be the lead partner of the eFREIGHT 2030 consortium — a government-backed collaboration fostering a widescale switch from diesel to electric power across the industry by 2030, and entirely electrifying the sector by 2035.

Voltempo is helping its clients navigate the journey from diesel to electric power through:

  • Site & grid development: identifying the best sites to connect with the grid
  • Charging solutions: developing its ultra-fast HyperCharger which delivers 1MW+ of power to up to six vehicles at once
  • Service & optimisation: offering consistent, high-quality support throughout the process from its team of experts

Growing the business

To support Voltempo’s growing business and drive their next phase of growth, it welcomed Simon Smith as the new CEO and John Fox into the role of Chief Operations Officer; both of whom bring a wealth of experience with them.

As well as these two key appointments, several other new strategic hires have taken place to grow the company from 3 employees to over 50, its highest number yet. To support this growth, Voltempo moved offices onsite at Tyseley Energy Park for the second time in its history, moving into the main office of the administration building.

Tyseley Energy Park’s ambitious development plans rely on organisations like this, those committed to scaling-up and revolutionising clean energy in the UK, creating highly skilled technical engineering jobs for those living within the West Midlands.

We’re delighted to have supported Voltempo through this period of growth and look forward to continuing this into 2026 and beyond.

SCALE-ing up

On 23 September 2025, Sir Vince Cable, Chair of the eFREIGHT 2030 consortium, opened the production site of Voltempo’s advanced megawatt charging system (MCS) — the HyperCharger.

Unlike other available electric chargers, the Hypercharger is purpose-built for heavy goods vehicles (HGVs). Its innovative “halo” design lifts and protects the heavy charging cables, preventing damage and making operation safer and more practical in busy logistics depots, thus revolutionising UK’s transition to zero-emission road freight.

Around the same time, the Voltempo team travelled up to Glasgow to participate in the first Road Transport Expo (RTX) Scotland event. Its founder, Michael Boxwell, spoke about two projects:

  • He announced its new SCALE (Scottish Commercial Accelerated Logistics Electrification) project; a bold, multi-year initiative designed to accelerate the transition of Scotland’s road freight sector from diesel to electric Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs).
  • He also discussed the ongoing work of eFREIGHT Autonomous, a consortium of experts in commercial vehicles and automotive technology, which has secured funding and support from the UK Government and industry through the CAM Pathfinder Feasibility Studies (FS) Competition delivered by Innovate UK and Zenzic.

Driving green industrial growth in the West Midlands

Another highlight from Voltempo’s 2025 at Tyseley Energy Park was welcoming

Mayor of the West Midlands, Richard Parker, to see the company’s work first-hand.

During this visit, the Mayor met with Voltempo’s leadership team and employees to discover more about their rapid expansion at Tyseley Energy Park. He commented: “Innovative, green industries are central to my Growth Plan and will play a key role in creating 100,000 new, well-paid jobs across our region.”

Since Mayor Parker’s visit, in January 2026, Voltempo installed its first live megawatt-scale electric HGV charging hub at East Midlands Gateway, supporting Kuehne+Nagel’s (K+N’s) UK overland fleet.

The site is the first MCS-ready (Megawatt Charging System) eHGV charging hub to operate live in the UK, marking a major step forward for zero-emission logistics. This site is the first of 25 planned HyperCharger hubs across the UK.

Supported by the UK government’s pledge to cut the cost of new electric lorries by up to £120,000, Voltempo is proud to be delivering electrification of commercial transport now, and not in the future.
